Root Canal Therapy in Winter Springs, FL

A root canal relieves the pain of an infected or inflamed tooth and lets you keep your natural tooth. At Winter Springs Family Dental, Dr. Narang and our team take the time to explain each step and keep you comfortable from start to finish.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • A toothache that lingers or wakes you up at night
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that stays after the food or drink is gone
  • Pain when you bite or chew
  • A darkened tooth
  • Swelling or a small bump on the gum near a tooth

Only an exam and an X-ray can tell for sure. Sometimes a smaller treatment, such as a filling, is enough.

What happens during a root canal

  1. Exam and digital X-rays to see the tooth and the root.
  2. Numbing so the area is comfortable. Laughing gas or oral sedation is available if you feel nervous.
  3. Cleaning the inside of the tooth. We remove the infected or inflamed pulp, clean and shape the canals, and seal them.
  4. Protecting the tooth. Most back teeth need a dental crown after a root canal so they do not crack.

Most patients say a root canal feels much like getting a filling. Some teeth with complex roots are best treated by an endodontist (a root canal specialist). If yours is one of them, we will tell you and refer you.

Comfort during your visit

We offer bottled water, a soft warm blanket, a neck pillow, sunglasses and lip balm, and sedation options include laughing gas and oral sedation. We use digital X-rays, an intraoral camera and the iTero Element scanner.

Root canal or extraction?

Saving your natural tooth is usually the better choice for chewing and for the bone around it. If a tooth cannot be saved, we can talk about a tooth extraction and replacement options such as a dental implant or a bridge.

FAQ section

Does a root canal hurt?
The area is numbed first, and most patients say it feels similar to having a filling. Laughing gas and oral sedation are available if you are nervous.

How many visits does a root canal take?
Many root canals are done in one or two visits, plus a visit for the crown if the tooth needs one. We will tell you what to expect for your tooth.

Will I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth usually need a crown afterward to protect them from cracking. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling.

Is it better to pull the tooth instead?
Keeping your natural tooth is usually best when it can be saved. If it cannot, we will go over extraction and replacement options with you.
